Dear Resident:
As you may have heard, exceptionally cold temperatures are forecast for Central Texas beginning this weekend and extending into next week. While you may have received freeze warnings in the past, the temperature is expected to drop to lows not seen in decades. The actions below are required to avoid damage to your home and personal property.
Please:
- DRIP INTERIOR FAUCETS when the temperature is below 29 degrees, at least 5 drops per minute. It’s more difficult for moving water to freeze.
- Disconnect garden hoses and cover exterior faucets.
- Cover exposed pipes.
- Keep your heat on, even if you’re not home.
- Open cabinet doors, especially for cabinets with plumbing on exterior walls so heat can get to the pipes.
- In unheated garages, shut off water to washing machines and water softeners.
- Locate the water shut off to your home, usually located near your water meter at the street, so you can shut the water off if a pipe breaks.
- Review this additional information from Austin-Travis County EMS: https://www.austintexas.gov/page/winter-weather-safety
